Has your search for freelance writing opportunities been leading to:

  • Jobs that pay too little, require too much or just plain aren't right for you?
  • Deadends and Confusion?
  • Expensive books and courses?

It can be frustrating out there. Maybe you are even questioning your dream of freelance writing and working from home.

Perhaps naysayers have told you it is very difficult to break into magazines or that writers from India have ruined online bidding for Americans or that creative writers must become copywriters if they want to feed their children, and on and on.

The truth is that whether you go into copywriting, creative writing or non fiction - if you love writing, plan well, and are willing to work at it...

You can make a living doing the type of writing you love.

Here are some quick examples:

Creative Writing!

Creative writers are finding online all kinds of ways to market and distribute their  novels short stories, and more. Many novelists are making thousands much more than they'd make with traditional publishing house contracts; and several, after self-publishing, have been offered book contracts.

Magazines!

Magazine editors continue to actively seek freelancers for magazines that pay $1 per word and more. It's true that some of these magazines aren't paying more than they did in the 1960's, but that doesn't mean the pay isn't good; the pay is still very good. It's just not incredibly fantastic as it was then. Magazines are not going away anytime soon. Many now also have online versions that offer additional content, and there are several exclusively digital magazines looking for writers.

Newspaper Journalism!

In spite of the shift we're seeing in the newspaper industry, there is opportunity for freelance journalists, including ones without journalism degrees. Due to layoffs, many of the newspapers are relying on freelancers. And there is a growing number of opportunities at online news organizations for journalists with digital skills, such as video. With an increasing demand for alternative online and print journalism - especially online -  it is an exciting time for independent and entrepreneurial journalism.

Copywriting!

Copywriters (those who write promotional and sales materials) are in great demand, and you needn't attend a single meeting or even pick up the phone to take advantage of these typically high-paying opportunities. As businesses continue to get hip to online marketing, and as online entrepreneurialism grows, the demand for copywriters increases.

Entrepreneurial Writers!

There is a great deal of money  - and fun - to be had through entreprenuerial adventures. Creating and selling informational products is one. Creating content websites and monetizing with advertising or affiliate links is another. The opportunities being created by entrepreneurial writers are limited only by  imagination, the ability to figure out what the market place wants or will likely want, and their skills.

What about Landing those Freelance Writer Jobs?

As you can see there is ample opportunity for freelance writers! As you may already know, grabbing these opportunities isn't as easy as scanning the freelance job listings and shooting off resumes.

The first thing to consider before looking for freelance work is the type of writing you really want to do.

Are you interested in creative writing? Journalistic writing? Copywriting for business? Freelancing for nonprofits? Teaching and adding joy to a child's life through your articles or stories? Do you want to write for publications, clients or your own entrepreneurial projects?

While with the right direction it's easy to dive into a marketplace right away, if you first take a look at the lay of the land, you will have a better chance of creating the writing career best suited to you by getting your resume and portfolio off to a good start.

The freelance writing opportunities that are right for you will depend on:

  • Your writing skills.
  • Your interests.
  • The publication or client's criteria.
  • Your criteria (pay, your ethics, time frame, etc.).
  • Your professional goals.

Once you've decided where you want to start, it's important to gain an understanding of how jobs in your market are best attained. Each industry has it's own protocols. If you decide to take the entrepreneurial route, learning the basics of online marketing will help you get off to a good start. From there, it's a matter of growing your freelance writing business and managing it well so that you have the life/work balance you want.

This may sound like a hassle, but if you do your homework, success and good money will come so much easier and faster.  Freelancing isn't for everyone. There are challenges, such as loss of a regular paycheck and job benefits, but for many of us, the rewards are great...

  • Freedom

  • Family Time

  • Financial Security - I knew this might surprise you, so a quick note - With job security a thing of the past, many are starting side businesses as insurance. But when you are freelancing you don't need to work at two jobs. As a full time freelancer, you can have a variety of clients or publishers – or if you become an entrepreneurial writer, you can have a variety of customers and products/services, so you never have all your eggs in one basket.

  • Work that Interests You

  • Tax Breaks

  • No More Long Commutes

  • Financial Independence

  • You're the Boss

The Bottom Line

If freedom is an important priority for you or being home with your family or both, your gonna love freelancing. It takes some work getting started, yes, but the rewards are well worth it!

I wish there had been such a guide when I first set out as a freelance writer in 1995. My name is Cindy Blankenship, and I am a colleague of its producer, Robert Leichter, a person who has a great deal of experience on the business end of freelancing, having worked as a freelance business and finance consultant.

On the writing side, this book is gleaned from my experiences and my research. I've worked as a freelance writer in the areas of journalism, copywriting and creative writing for a combined 14 years. When I received my first check from a publication (a local newspaper), I had no previous experience and no portfolio. Like you, I had a strong desire to write and to freelance.

I wouldn't trade my freelance writing career for any other work; but again, success would have come faster had I known then what I know now, and what you can be learning from this guide today.

What you won't get:

An ebook packed with affiliate links.  All links are there for one reason: to provide you with more resources. We are not receiving any compensation for them.

If you follow the suggestions in this book, and if you have writing skills or you have a deep enough appreciation for the written word that you are willing to develop them, you can make a very good living at writing, even a six figure income.
